Rufus' Reflections

Rufus the dog.

Hello world! My name's Rufus and I intend to use this blog to opine about whatever's on my mind. Paul belongs to me and has decided it'll be okay for me to use this part of his website to that end. So, here's the world from my perspective...

Why Christmas is for the Birds

The missus really likes birds.  Actually, she likes just about every kind of critter except roaches.  Her favorite birds are cardinals.  Pop’s favorite is the turkey but he likes the other ones, too (except for blue jays and crows).  They’ve put up bird feeders around the house and they especially like to watch the little black hats and those itty bitty hummingbirds on the porch.  I kinda like watchin’ ’em myself.

Anyway, Pop was mullin’ over Christmas stories to tell his Boy Scouts during his “Scoutmaster’s Minute” the other day when he remembered one that this fella, Paul Harvey, told on … continue reading »

The window sills at our house are about a foot off the floor which is a great height for me to rest my chin while surveying the front yard and street.  I like to bark at people, other dogs and the various things I see as they go by.  Pop has asked me what I’d do with the cars (or squirrels) I bark at, if I could actually chase one and catch it.  I never really gave it much thought.  I suppose barking at the things I see that are different and don’t seem to belong here is instinctive.  Pop … continue reading »

Pop has been a little, whatcha call, “pooky” lately.  His youngest daughter, Lindy, got married recently and he said he’s been waxin’ nostalgic ’bout stuff ever since.

He said he supposes walkin’ her down the aisle and havin’ that daddy-daughter dance at the reception is what did it.

I know he’s been thinkin’ a lot about his Boy Scouts, too, particularly the ones that are becoming Eagles this year and in the next few months.  He’s been hangin’ out with those boys for about a dozen years and had a hand in about 16 other Eagles, but the 6 guys that have … continue reading »

Like most other dogs, I’m a sniffer.  You folks just don’t know how many other smells are out there wafting around in the breeze.  I can find anybody in the house just by sniffin’ for ’em.

For example, Pop smells like Aqua Velva.  He was sayin’ the other day how his dad had a unique smell, too.  Said it was something called Vitalis that he used in his hair.  His momma usually had the scent of Jergen’s Lotion; a hand cream she used.

For a while there I thought maybe ol’ Pop had some Labradog in him, too, ’cause he was talkin’ … continue reading »

Although this blog is normally reserved for Rufus’ rants, I decided to commandeer the keyboard for a posting that, due to timing, merits consideration.

This past Sunday, 14 October, 2012, Felix Baumgartner did something remarkable.  Stepping from the gondola of a helium-filled balloon at more than 120,000 feet, he fell to earth exceeding, at one point, 800 miles per hour and became the first person to travel at (and survive) supersonic (in excess of Mach 1) speeds without the aid of an aircraft.  He parachuted to a stand-up landing near Roswell, New Mexico.

Coincidentally, that same day 89 year old Chuck Yeager … continue reading »
